The Inhibitory Effect of Polysaccharide on Mumps Virus Multiplication
نویسندگان
چکیده
Polysaccharides derived from type-specific Friedländer bacilli cause inhibition of the multiplication of mumps virus in the allantoic sac of the chick embryo. As little as 5 microg. of polysaccharide is effective as an inhibitor. Inhibition of multiplication is obtained when polysaccharide is injected as long as 4 days after inoculation of virus. Chemical studies have shown that the structural configurations of the polysaccharide responsible for specific serological activity are not identical with those which determine the inhibitory effect relative to mumps virus. The possible mechanisms of the inhibition of viral multiplication by means of polysaccharides are discussed.

A Resistant Variant of Mumps Virus
Serial passage of mumps virus in the presence of inhibitory quantities of the capsular polysaccharide of Friediänder bacillus type B results in the appearance of a variant strain of the virus. Multiplication of the variant virus is not inhibited by the polysaccharide. A similar resistant variant is obtained with polysaccharide in a single cycle of multiplication when very large inocula of mumps...
متن کاملChemotherapy of virus infections.
In recent years, antibiotics have proved effective against many bacterial and all rickettsial infections of man, but are only of limited value in virus infections. The so-called broad spectrum antibiotics-aureomycin, terramycin and chloramphenicol-are effective against the viruses of the psittacosis-lymphogranuloma group and those causing primary atypical pneumonia. Many substances are therefor...
متن کاملEFFECT OF SODIUM MONOFLUOROACETATE ON THE MUL- TIPLICATION OF INFLUENZA VIRUSES, MUMPS VIRUS, AND PNEUMONIA VIRUS OF MICE (PVM) BY WILLIAM J. MOGABGAB,* M.D., AlCD
The multiplication of pneumonia virus of mice (PVM) and mumps virus can be inhibited by substances of known composition (1, 2). I t has been shown that such inhibition can be obtained when the substance is given in the latent period during single cycles of multiplication (3, 4). This evidence supports the concept that the inhibiting substance affects the host cell, rather than the virus, and al...
متن کاملHigh inhibitory activity of certain halogenated ribofuranosylbenzimidazoles on influenza B virus multiplication.
Earlier studies (Tamm et al., 1954; Tamm, 1954) showed that benzimidazole derivatives of very high inhibitory activity on influenza and mumps virus multiplication could be produced by multiple substitution of chlorine atoms in the benzenoid ring with ft-D-ribofuranose present at Ni in the imidazole ring. In subsequent reports (Tarm, 1955; Tamm, 1956) evidence was presented to show that the mode...
متن کاملConcurrent Infection with Influenza Virus and Mumps Virus or Pneumonia Virus of Mice (pvm) as Bearing on the Inhibition of Virus Multiplication by Bacterial Polysaccharides
Preexisting infection with PVM or mumps virus does not prevent multiplication of the virus of influenza A or B in the same tissue. Similarly, pre-existing infection with one or another of the influenza viruses does not prevent multiplication of either PVM or mumps virus in the same tissue. The failure of these two groups of viruses to interfere with the multiplication of each other is discussed...
